Porter is a person who carries portable freigh with a saddle that is tied with a rope on his shoulder or with a cart for a fee. It is a profession that exist in general Turkey and around countries of it. In Turkish, people call the porter as “hamal“.
How Does Porter (Hamal) Work?
As they work alone, they work in groups at large markets. Porters who work without group take their own earnings.
With a group, employees bring the money they have earned and share it equally.
Regardless of how much freigh they carry, the money that all the porters earn in a day is shared equally among all. Porters that are working as a group are usually fellow citizens and migrated from the same village.
They walk about 1,5 mile with loads on their shoulders!
As well as carrying, loading and unloading work on the bazaars, in short distances (100 meters – 1,5 mile ) porter carries the goods to bus garages, storage and warehouses under supervision of customer.
After the automation in the industry became widespread, the old porter systems got out of the way. In advanced places, transportation, loading and unloading are done by machines, bands, logistics facilities, cranes and work machines.
Europe prohibit it.
Porter is a profession that does not exist in European countries. Because in Europe, trade unions prohibit the transport of goods over 30 kg to a person.
My personal note: That profession does not look like easy. And not a job anybody can do.
That is exactly the meaning of “shoulder the world’s burden “.
